Adam Herbst

Adam has always been fascinated by math and science and loves nothing more than sharing that enchantment with students. While majoring in Applied Physics at Cornell University, he tutored both local high schoolers and fellow college students. After graduating, he tried out working in the software industry and other odd jobs, then was reacquainted with education through a nifty L.A.-based nonprofit that used upcycled factory waste to teach STEM concepts! The freedom he found in teaching through such unconventional means re-ignited his passion for education, and since then he has been tutoring nonstop. His specialties include Physics, Calculus, and Computer Science, as well as test prep and other subjects. In his spare time he enjoys playing piano and trying to learn about the mysteries of modern physics.

dr.ETHA WILLIAMS

Etha Williams got her PhD in Historical Musicology at Harvard University, where she is pursuing a dissertation project that examines how eighteenth-century keyboard playing influenced medical and philosophical theories about the body. Her interdisciplinary research combines work in music history, philosophy, the history of science, and gender studies to investigate why eighteenth-century philosophers and physicians often turned to the harpsichord as a metaphor for human neurobiology. Prior to her graduate studies in musicology, Etha completed a BA in Biology with an emphasis in neuroscience at the University of Chicago. While her field of study has changed, her interest in the science and philosophy of human perception and cognition has remained constant. She sees the intersection of medicine and music as a particularly rich example of how changing cultural and historical values have shaped our understandings of embodiment, consciousness, and emotion. She has especially enjoyed the opportunity to work with junior students supervising research projects on topics including philosophies of composition, improvisation, and performance; theories of vocal timbre in popular music; and the history of American country music in Italy. Etha sees research as a creative and joyful pursuit and is passionate about helping students find connections between their academic pursuits, personal interests, and long-term goals.

tiffany kang

Violinist Tiffany Kang made her solo debut with the San Fernando Valley Orchestra at age eleven and has since gone on to perform in Carnegie Weill Hall debut at age twelve as a winner of the American Protégé International Strings Competition. In 2013, Tiffany won third prize at the 2013 Schoenfeld International Competition and gave a recital at the American Jewish University’s Gindi Auditorium within the same year. She was also named a finalist of the Mondavi Young Artists Competition in 2011. More recently, Tiffany won the LACO-Colburn Conservatory Strings Mentorship Mock Audition in 2019 and performed a concert cycle with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Jaime Martín. As an avid lover of chamber music, Tiffany has had the privilege to collaborate with distinguished artists Frank Morelli at the Sarasota Opera House, and Scott St. John as part the Colburn Chamber Music Society’s Beethoven 250 series. Since beginning her bachelor studies in the Colburn Conservatory, Tiffany’s devotion to and appreciation for classical music also extends to Baroque music. Her studies while in the Colburn Baroque Ensemble has led her to join Kontrapunktus, a chamber orchestra dedicated to performing Baroque repertory. Born and raised in Southern California, Tiffany studied with Sam Fischer, Danielle Belen, the late Alice Schoenfeld, and Martin Beaver while in the Colburn CSPA and Academy. Tiffany is currently in her fourth year of bachelor studies at the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, under the tutelage of Mr. Martin Beaver. During the pandemic, Tiffany has taken the greatest joy out of teaching young students just beginning to begin violin studies. She is focusing her efforts on building her studio and hoping to impart the same inspiration and love for classical music she received as a child.
